These images we have obtained are wholly copyright, I cannot claim that I took the photographs; I was not even born at that time. These shots depict the Great Northern section of the LNER in what must have been the most exciting times of Britain’s railways. On the LNER, Mr Nigel Gresley (as he was then) was chief mechanical engineer. His achievements are legendary, but in this period only four of his designs had been introduced, the famous class A1 & A3, the D49 and the mammoth P1. At this time, there were still the classic C1 atlantics in abundance, the D11`s et al, all of these are in the following pages.

The vast majority of photographs are taken on glass half plate, a few on half plate film! Unfortunately there is very little detail on the negative sleeve, sometimes the date, sometimes the location, rarely both and never the train being worked.

This is where you come in, a lot of the details we have had to guess, but if you know better please let us know via the Contact page and we will make the necessary alterations, please don’t hesitate, we really need your help!!!
