Welcome to my memories of the East Coast Main Line of British Railways
or as we of that time will always remember it, as the LNER main line. The
photographs displayed are all mine and go back to my earliest efforts in 1948;
however my memories go back to 1946 when I paid my first visit to Kings
Cross, before that as a small boy I was devoted to the Southern Railway. At
that time I lived in Central London and had easy access to all the main line
termini, most evenings and weekends were spent at either Waterloo or
Victoria, nothing could equal the variety of motive power such as Lord
Nelsons, King Arthur’s, Schools or the new Merchant Navy pacifics,
or so I thought! Until, that fateful evening in June 1946 when I thought I would for a
change have a look at the “Northern’s”, nearest to me was Euston but I was
not impressed, all the engines I saw were still in drab wartime black, I
decided to walk down Euston Road to St Pancras Station but it was very quiet
there, I decided to cross the Midland Road to this drab, uninspiring station
called Kings Cross, I was almost immediately greeted by a sparkling clean
apple green loco, number 800 “Green Arrow”. I was in love! I thought she was
beautiful, after she backed out I ran up Yorkway to
Yorkway Platform and there in the loco yard was a
vision in garter blue number 21 “Wild Swan”, I was hooked, there was no going
back to Victoria, I had met my “Waterloo” the LNER. I have tried to convey my memories of those happy times through my photographs,
I thought it would be appropriate to lay this site out as a journey from
Kings Cross to Aberdeen, though there will be some diversions, notably the
last page the Great Eastern. You can contact me on the contact page, I will be pleased to hear from
you, even criticism, constructive of course, I need help, I’m very new to
site building. All the images are mine and are copyright, if you wish to download for
your own use I have no objection, I must warn you they are formatted in jpeg
and very low definition. Glossy prints are available, again go to the contact
page. All the pictures will enlarge, simply left click on thumbnail. I hope you enjoy my journey. This site is under construction, the GNML (Great
Northern Main Line) is now loaded, along with
the Pre-Grouping (those photographs taken before 1923) and the Great
Western Railway. Some of these pictures are donated by the Friedman
Collection which are strictly copyright and copying in part or whole is
forbidden. Enjoy! |
